Iran Mobilizes to Stifle Opposition Protests

BEIRUT—Iranian authorities deployed in force across Tehran Wednesday to conduct last-minute security sweeps and warn residents to refrain from joining antigovernment protests planned for Thursday.

The government typically orchestrates large, carnival-like rallies and demonstrations to mark the anniversary of the Islamic Republic. For this year's events on Feb. 11, the day marking the culmination of the annual celebrations, opposition leaders have called for protesters to demonstrate against the regime. That has set the stage for clashes between authorities and demonstrators, who have taken to the streets repeatedly to protest the outcome of presidential elections in June.

Government officials, meanwhile, ratcheted up threats against any protests Thursday, vowing to confront demonstrators on the streets and calling for government supporters to turn out in large numbers. Iranian officials have branded protesters as agents of foreign powers.

The Iranian judiciary has handed down a number of harsh sentences against protesters arrested in previous demonstrations, including at least 10 pending death sentences.

15 student leaders arrested in Tehran

15 student leaders arrested in Tehran: Via Radio Zamaneh in English .

Fifteen members of central council of the student organization Unity Consolidation Bureau have been arrested by security forces today in Tehran. The detainees have been taken to an unknown location and so far no announcements concerning their charges have been released.

Prior to the opening of the fall university term, the Revolutionary Guards and security forces as well as the Supreme Leader himself had warned students to stay away from protests. The establishment has described student protests and their demands for reform as a tool of foreign conspiracies to undermine the government. The teaching of humanities has been portrayed as a threat to the rule of Velayat-e Faqih represented by Ayatollah Khamenei, a pretext which many feel will result in the dismissing of progressive faculty members.

Aides close to Karoubi say Iran's judiciary ordered a ban on the daily Sunday, after it printed his claims that some election protesters were raped while in custody.

Protests as Iran's Ahmadinejad sworn in as president: Via Reuters.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was sworn in as Iran's president on Wednesday in a ceremony boycotted by reformist leaders and parliamentarians and marred by street protests over his victory.

The 53-year-old hard-liner took his oath of office nearly eight weeks after a disputed election that unleashed the worst unrest since the 1979 Islamic revolution and divided the political and clerical elite.

Ahmadinejad said Iran wanted peaceful coexistence with the world but would resist any "bullying" power.

"Internationally, we seek peace and security. But because we want this for all of humanity, we oppose injustice, aggression and the high-handedness of some countries," he said.

Former presidents Mohammad Khatami and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who support Mousavi, boycotted the inauguration. The official IRNA news agency said most of parliament's 70 reformist legislators also stayed away.

Riot police were out in force in nearby streets. Witnesses said hundreds of supporters of Ahmadinejad's main political rival, Mirhossein Mousavi, gathered near parliament.

"I was beaten by police who wanted to disperse protesters," said a witness, who declined to give her name.

Our Iranian Observers tell us that the police are still arresting demonstrators. One, however, already handcuffed, managed to escape.

In preparation for Ahmadinejad's inauguration the authorities banned all gatherings on Monday. The time and place of the ceremony was kept secret but protesters turned out anyway in the Vali-e-Asr and Vanak districts.

Iranian riot police and opposition supporters clashed in Tehran Monday, hours after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was endorsed as president for a second term.

A correspondent for Iran's state-run Press TV says riot police used tear gas to disperse about 2,000 demonstrators who gathered between Valiasr and Vanak Squares in the capital.

Iran has barred foreign news organizations from sending reporters to cover opposition protests.

Earlier, Iran's supreme leader formally endorsed the second-term presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, despite opposition claims of fraud in his re-election.

Thousands flood a Tehran cemetery on the 40th day since the killing of Neda Agha-Soltan. Their defiance sets the stage for protests next week, when President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is to be sworn in.

Reporting from Tehran and Beirut -- Protesters swarmed Tehran's main cemetery and fanned out across a large swath of the capital Thursday, defying truncheons and tear gas to publicly mourn those killed during weeks of unrest, including a young woman whose death shocked people around the world.

The protests marked the 40th day since the shooting of Neda Agha-Soltan was captured on video and posted on the Internet. For Shiite Muslims, the 40th day has religious importance, often an occasion for an outpouring of emotion and grief.
