TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Thousands of defiant protesters swept again Saturday into the streets of the Iranian capital, where they clashed with police armed with batons, tear gas and water cannons.

A stream of videos posted on social networking Web sites depicted scenes of chaos -- the sound of gunshots and helicopters whirring overhead and graphic images of wounded men and women being carried away.

Unconfirmed reports put the death toll as high as 150 on the seventh day of post-election protests. Sources at one Tehran hospital confirmed 19 deaths Saturday.

Obama Reluctant to Toughen Stance on Iran

Obama Reluctant to Toughen Stance on Iran: Via NYTimes.com .

WASHINGTON — With Iran on a razor’s edge after a week of swelling protests, the Obama administration has fended off pressure from both parties to respond more forcefully to the disputed election there. But if Iranian authorities carry out their latest threat of a more sweeping crackdown, the White House would reconsider its carefully calibrated tone, officials said Friday.

TEHRAN -- Two rival forces are competing for the upper hand in Iran's postelection dispute: public demonstrations in the streets and waves of quiet arrests of dozens of prominent reform and opposition figures.

The Iranian government, meanwhile, accused the U.S. for the first time of interfering in the postelection dispute. Iran protested to the Swiss ambassador, who represents U.S. affairs in Iran because the two nations have no diplomatic ties. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said that President Barack Obama stands by his defense of principles such as the right of people to demonstrate.

Iranian Reformist Movements Planning More Protests: Via Voice of America.

Reformist movements in Iran are hoping to carry out more rallies to protest a disputed election that has triggered the most serious unrest in the country since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Groups backing reformist Mir Hossein Mousavi, the top rival to re-elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have asked Iran's Interior Ministry for permission to hold demonstrations on Wednesday.

In enormous mass rallies Tuesday in Tehran, large groups supported either Mr. Ahmadinejad or Mr. Mousavi.

Authorities tightened restrictions on foreign news organizations Tuesday, banning reporters and photographers from covering demonstrations.
